COURSE 7
THE WINDS OF LIFE FLOW IN EVERY
DIRECTION
CELEBRATE YOUR EXISTENCE
When translating from one language to another, sometimes it blurs the thought process or loses the depth of its true meaning. I will be teaching many Sioux words and expressions throughout these seven lessons.
In the beginning, long before life existed, blackness ruled the universe. There
was no sun, moon, or wind, not even motion.
Inyan (Stone), lived as a
soft and pliable form who existed in the darkness of the sky.
After eons of time, Inyan became lonely. Since there was no other, he knew if he should ever have a companion, he would have to create it from himself. Pondering his situation, he made sure he would continue to control his power. He took a part of himself, opened his veins and spread his blood around, forming a disc like shape and named it, Maka Ina, Mother Earth.
During this time, Tateí, the Father of the winds, raised four sons and one illegitimate son. He spoke with Wazi, (WAH-ZE-YAH) their Grandfather, asking this great Wizard of the North, to guide his sons across the world and help them establish the four directions and the four directional winds.
Everyone knew, once this was accomplished, Tateí would return to the spirit world and become the companion of Taku Skan Skan, (motion) all the while Tateí, the Father of the winds, would remain in control. As each son established their direction, they knew this would become their home for eternity.
The sonís were given one year to find their individual direction. Tateí gave his sonís control over one season per year, one direction which each held three moonsÖ
After this miracle was accomplished, the four sacred beings of higher power were created and granted permission to make companions for themselves. Inyan, wanted a companion different from all others. He created Wakinyan, (Thunder Bird (Contrar) power, as his helper. Inyan gave him wings with many joints that could grow very large or very small. Although he had no head, he was given one penetrating eye from which lightning blazed. He was given razor-like talons where his feet and legs should have been, and his mouth was a beak with needle-like teeth that carried his voice of thunder through the skies and across the land.
Taku Skan
Skan, the spirit who gives motion to all beings, told Wakinyan he
was to ugly to allow others to see him, so he dressed himself in a robe
of clouds, hiding his fierce appearance from the scornful scrutiny of others.
Wakinyan built his house on the flat top of a high mountain at the edge of the world. His home had no roof and the walls were barren. And since he liked sitting on hard, rough surfaces, he filled his dwelling with sharp rocks. From this mountain-top home, Wakinyan flies over the world, searching for evil to destroy. He worked closely with TatÈ, the Wind and the Water, to rid the world of filth and decay.
Inyan, wanted his companion to have children, He asked Wakinyan to fertilize a huge egg to create many new beings. But Wakinyan, being the contrary spirit that he is, roughed up the egg by beating, stomping and tossing it around, until the shell finally cracked open. Instead of a baby, a full-grown being emerged. Although its body was misshapen, he was very wise. Taku Skan Skan named him Ksa, Wisdom.
Ksa was asked to plant new things under the world that would taste and smell good. Wakinyan gave him a secret dust. Woope, White Buffalo Calf Woman, breathed life into the planted dust and immediately white fruit grew which became the food for the spirits.
It was Taku Skan Skan who created the Pte Oyate, Buffalo People. Wakinyan gave each their Sicun, ( intellect,) one of the four parts of the soul.
Along with Ksa, Woope, TatÈ and Wakinyan, each helped to create all the green things to make Maka Ina, Mother Earth beautiful. Unk- Contention, refused to provide the needed water to keep the plants and the standing-ones healthy. Wakinyan took his robe of clouds and soaked them with water. He flew over the lands ringing out his robe, thus the first rain was created.
Taku SKan Skan asked all the spirits to create creatures that would become the subjects of Maka Ina, Mother Earth.
Although Wakinyan appears frightening and terrible, he helped the other spirits create eggs that hatched into insects of all kind. He took the eggs and wrapped them in fruit and they became reptiles. He took other eggs and created the birds. After he scrutinized his designs, he gave some of the creatures claws and pointed teeth, others he covered with hair, some with fur and still others, he covered with scales, until all the creatures were properly clothed.
To this day,
Wakinyan uses the water and the winds to create terrible storms to destroy
the filth from Mother Earth. The negative thoughts from our minds
and actions, not only harm each other, but fills our atmosphere with darkness
and is considered to be the major destructive energy to Mother Earth created
from the human. He warns all of us with his thunderous
voice as he approaches, shooting lightning bolts into Maka Ina, Mother
Earthís body, fertilizing our planet, bringing the gift of new birth, growth,
peace, harmony and beauty to our land...
THE FOUR SACRED WINDS OF CHANGE
THE NORTH WIND (YATA)
Yata, (the North Wind), was first born and lives in the far North, near
the star that never moves. He rules winter and his favorite trees are the
evergreens. His color is white and his messenger is the magpie and enemy to all
birds. From the North we learn: Purity, Renewal and cleansing.
Yata personality is strong, cold, cruel and disagreeable, has a lack of trust in all things. He controls others through intimidation, using his illñtemper, jealousy, doubt, and fear.
Wazi told Yata to place a stone on the path to establish the North direction. Since he could not find a stone, he chose a large block of ice which immediately turned into a huge bluff. From thereafter, this became his home.
Yataís cold breathe blows hard and steady against life, forcing all to learn the harsh lessons of survival. Each winter as Yata arrives, he uses his cold breathe to kill all things in his path, leaving nothing but bared ground and twisted trees ripped from the earth, leaving mere skeleton shadows of his harsh ghostly breathe. Yata demands we follow the path of Purity, Renewal and CleansingÖ
THE EAST WIND (YAN-PAH)
The color of the East (YAN-PAH) is
blue and the third born son. The owl is
the messenger. The spring is his season
and lives the great waters forever flow. He lives where WI, the sun,
begins his daily journey. Wazi asked Yanpa to place a stone to fix
the East direction. Since he too, could not find a stone, he placed a wand in
the ground and the following Morning a huge oak tree grew.
Yanpa is a lazy sort of guy and wants others to take care of his needs.
He invites us to fill our heart with self love, a love that will never end. Ride with the winds through the valleys of Mother Earth and across the glorious mountains that reach the sky. He ask us to feel that special moment of freedom as we fly high above and know you are hearing the whispers of the old people beckoning you back to the sacredness of lifeÖ
THE SOUTH WIND (E-TOH-GAH, SHAY)
The color of the
South Wind is red. His name in Sioux is (E-TOH-GAH,
SHAY), IS ALSO KNOWN
AS OKAGA). His season is summer. He is fourth born and his messenger is
the meadowlark.
Wazi told him to find the perfect place to establish the South direction, then place a shell to mark his new home.
It was (E-Toh-Gah-Shay,) who gave voice to the flute to remind us of the sacred music of the universe. He is thoughtful, kind and faithful. From the South he teaches us: Love, Growth and Truth.
When we show respect for our life, we release ourselves from our past hurts. Only then, can you rebuild your life, smile with understanding and wisdom as you find your place in the sun.
When we perform the pipe ceremony (E-TOH-GAH, SHAY), reminds us to be thankful for our gift of life. Free your heart and mind and allow your soul to rise as a blazing star ridding the world of human sorrow, all the while standing up in all that you are.(E-TOH-GAH, SHAY) lives in the South direction along with little Yum (Whirlwind) and Whoope, the daughter of Taku Skan Skan, in a rainbow colored tipiÖ
THE WEST WIND (EYA)
EYA (The West Wind) lives in the
mountainís where the sun goes over
down. His color is yellow. His direction is
in the west. Autumn is his season. His messenger is the swallow. From the West
direction Eya teaches us: Strength, Introspection and ExperienceÖ
Eya (the West Wind) is also Contrar, also known as Heyoka power. His work is done under the guidance of Wakinyan, the Thunder Being.
Eya walks with Wakinyan power flashing brilliant streaks of lightning bolts criss-crossing the sky. The thunder sounds like the hooves of ten thousand buffalo stampeding across the plains. He creates clouds of darkness and as they collide in a swirling tempest, lightning strikes Mother Earth to fertilize and revitalize her body.
When Wakinyan walks the land, all humankind stands in awe of his powerful spirit. He is a spirit of duality. He is terrifying and destructive, yet a clown and also the restorer. This fearless wind is careless and will do whatever is necessary to clean the filth from Mother Earth.
THE QUARTERING WINDS
The ever blowing quartering winds come from THE NORTHEAST demanding
we ACCEPT
the coldness of truth and CONTROL our flaring tempers, yet fight to hold our
PRIDE through those chilly nights of aloofness as we fight to keep ourselves on
the road to failure or successÖ
The NORTH-WEST WIND, places the cold chill in the air making us ponder our past and wonder what tomorrow will bring. We listen to this wind and sometimes feel a slight touch of loneliness, questioning what are we doing with our life? As we reach out to live life, we soon find whatever we are searching for but, most do not know a happy life can existÖ
The SOUTHEAST Wind, embraces the powers of those quarreling dog days of summer, making us lazy, irresponsible and procrastinate, all the while letting our dreams slip through our fingers with no remorseÖ
The SOUTHWEST, embraces life with the sweet smells of the flowering wild plants. This wind blows soothing warmth of security as it surrounds us with the sounds of insects, bird songs as we lay on the ground watching the clouds drift overhead thinking of our possibilities to enhance our future. For a moment, think of your life giving BREATH and realize breathing is a sacred gift. Shall we dance with the knowledge of the FOUR WINDS and guide our soul back to the Wakan Tanka, The Great Spirit.
